The
humane treatment of laying hens has always been a priority
at Sauder's Quality Eggs.
That's
why you'll find our products endorsed with the "United Egg
Producers Certified" seal. It's your assurance that Sauder
eggs are produced in compliance with United Egg Producers'
Animal Husbandry Guidelines.
Healthy and Humane Treatment
Farmers have
long known that healthy, well-treated hens produce the best
eggs - and more of them. Now, the egg
industry's Animal Welfare Guidelines provide clearly defined
best practices in a wide range of areas, such as:
- Housing
and space allowance - providing the
right amount of space to prevent stress from crowding or
aggressive behavior
- Production
practices - enabling laying efficiency
without jeopardizing hen health
- Handling
and transportation - preventing discomfort
or distress throughout the hen's life cycle.
Scientifically based standards
An independent Scientific Advisory Committee for Animal Welfare
implemented the Animal Welfare Guidelines in 2002 following a
two-year study. The committee, commissioned by the United Egg
Producers, consisted of US Department of Agriculture officials,
university researchers and humane-association members. The guidelines
it established have been reviewed and endorsed by the Food Marketing
Institute and the National Council of Chain Restaurants.
Farmers Committed to Best Practices
At Sauder's
Eggs, we work closely with family farmers in Pennsylvania,
Maryland and Ohio to ensure that their flocks are maintained
under the industry's certification standards. The certified
farms that supply our eggs are examined annually by independent
auditors who score them on a rigorous checklist of animal husbandry
practices.
The Best of Both Worlds
Modern agricultural
practices have vastly improved food production efficiency while
holding down the cost of a wholesome, healthy diet. Through
our commitment to Animal Welfare Guidelines, Sauder's Eggs
is helping ensure that we maintain a balance between these
highly effective practices and the welfare of the animals we
depend upon for our food.
